EMNA ZGHAL: "RECENT PAINTINGS & PRINTS"

  May 3rd - May 28th, 2004

DM Contemporary is a new gallery on the north shore of Long Island presenting contemporary art in a contemporary residential setting. For its inaugural show, DM Contemporary is proud to present the work of Tunisian artist Emna Zghal who lives and works in New York City. The show, “Emna Zghal: Recent Paintings and Prints” features Zghal’s new works which combine woodcut printing with drawing and painting media. These mixed media paintings transcend traditional practices of printmaking and painting and achieve a unique expression. Zghal's images are not conceived on the woodblock, but her interpretation of the organic patterns on it is usually her starting point. She then develops the paintings by layering gouache and pastels to suggest mysterious landscapes or natural phenomena. The surfaces of Zghal's paintings were described by Roberta Smith, in a 2002 New York Times article, as having "...quiet pulsing power and sophisticated technique." Zghal's patterns never feel confined in the surface that supports them but imply an infinite expansion: the immensity of nature.

Zghal studied at the Ecole Des Beaux Arts in Tunisia, and at The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, PA. Her work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Tunisia, France, USA, Germany, Japan, Kuwait, India, Lebanon and Italy. Zghal has received fellowships from many prominent art organizations, such as: The Newark Art Museum, NJ, The Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, ME, the Lower East Side Printshop, NY, the MacDowell Colony, NH, the Weir Farm Trust, CT, the Vermont Studio Center, VT, and the Cité Internationale Des Arts in Paris.

Recently, the Schomburg Center, a branch of the New York Public Library, acquired a portfolio of her prints for their collection.

There will be a private inaugural reception on Sunday, May 2nd, after which the exhibition will be open to the public by appointment starting May 3rd. For further information please contact the gallery by phone (516) 922-3552, or email: info@dmcontemporary.com.
