DM Contemporary is pleased to present the work of Jackie
Battenfield in an exhibition entitled: “Hothouse”.
Battenfield creates bold, expressive paintings and works on
paper that range from the meditative to the dramatic. Her
imagery evokes elements of nature that mirror inner emotional
landscapes. Her painting process begins with layering translucent
colors – colors which reflect a broad emotional palette,
rather than a realistic one – by pouring, brushing,
sweeping, and dripping the paint over the surface of the canvas.
Anchoring these abstract, atmospheric layers of paint are
silhouettes of branches, gestural tree limbs, and recognizable
forms from nature. Battenfield describes her work as a metaphorical
“hothouse” sheltering her marks, colors, and the
images she paints.
Battenfield’s work has
been exhibited extensively in galleries, universities and
museums. In 1991, she was the recipient of a prestigious painting
award from The Pollock-Krasner Foundation, and in 1996, she
received The Warren-Tanner Memorial Fund Award in painting.
Battenfield’s work is in over 1000 private, public,
and corporate collections worldwide including: Cablevision,
Long Island, NY; Fidelity Investments, MA; Jinling Tower,
China; Sasaki Collection, Japan; Montclair Art Museum, NJ;
Palmer Museum of Art, PA; The New York Public Library, NY;
The USA Department of State, Washington, DC, as well as USA
Embassy Collections in Peru, Brazil, and Croatia.
Jackie Battenfield was born
in Pittsburgh, PA. She received her BA from Pennsylvania State
University, and her MFA from Syracuse University. She lives
and works in New York City, and teaches at the Bronx Museum
of Art and at Columbia University.
