Contemporary is proud to present the work of Barbara Andrus
in an exhibition entitled: “Barbara Andrus: New Sculptures
and Drawings.” Barbara Andrus was born in Boston, MA,
and studied sculpture at the Boston Museum School. Currently,
she lives and works in New York City, spending significant time
in Maine, where she gathers material for her sculpture. Using
wood in it’s natural form as her inspiration, as well
as her material, Andrus creates works that are visually intriguing
and seductively tactile. Tree limbs, branches, and twigs are
woven or tied together to construct monumental installations,
or small scale accessible sculptures. According to Susie Kalil,
a Houston based writer and critic, upon encountering Andrus’
work one feels “… a kinship with ancient working
rhythms, with totem builders of early societies, with ancient
memories from deep time.” In her recent work, the sphere,
a recurring form in Andrus’ work, is sometimes covered
with layers of cloth in varying translucencies and collaged
with paper elements. Here the interest shifts from the structure
itself to the surface of the form.
Andrus’ work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group
shows in galleries, universities, and museums. She has received
fellowships from many prominent arts organizations, such as:
Marie Walsh Sharpe Foundation, NY, Fine Arts Work Center, MA,
Art Omi, NY, Somerville Arts Council, NY, Bronx Museum, NY,
Sculpture Space, NY, Franconia Sculpture Park, MN, Edward Albee
Foundation, NY.
The completion of the book, “Wood Whirled,” documenting
Andrus’ larger outdoor work is anticipated later this
spring.
There will be a private reception on Sunday, June 6th, after
which the exhibition will be open to the public by appointment
starting June 7th. For further information please contact the
